About this camp

KoKo NYC Summer Workshops offer engaging, hands-on experiences for children aged 5-14, fostering creativity and practical skills through self-directed play and material exploration. Younger campers (ages 5-7) in Camp KoKo delve into building projects using recycled and found objects, with guidance from a 1:3 staff-to-child ratio. They learn to use hand saws, battery-operated drills, small motors, and electronics, developing confidence, leadership, and innovation by taking controlled risks in a supportive environment.

Older participants (ages 8-14) in the Soap Box Workshop independently or in small groups transform recycled materials into functional gravity racers. This involves designing steering and brakes, incorporating imaginative features, and troubleshooting during test drives. Both programs emphasize building and engineering skills, ingenuity, and environmental responsibility through creative reuse. The workshops culminate in a Mini Derby, where children celebrate their creations and test drive their vehicles, with an annual South Slope Derby for all participants.
