The program offers a unique blend of hands-on design challenges, real-world field trips within New York City, and the opportunity to create and present architectural models.
The Center for Architecture Summer Programs offer week-long immersive experiences for students to explore diverse architectural topics. Participants engage in hands-on art and building activities, design challenges, and guided investigations of architectural examples. Programs often include field trips to significant sites in New York City, allowing students to observe real-world applications of architectural principles. Through these activities, students develop a sense of curiosity towards observation, drawing, and modeling, while gaining foundational architectural design skills. They learn about the design process, explore spatial concepts, and conduct site analysis. Each program culminates in students designing and creating their own architectural models or public art installations, which are then presented to families. High school students can also experience a comprehensive introduction to a first-year college-level architectural studio, focusing on architectural drawing and scale model making, providing insight into a design studio setting.
All Summer Programs meet from 9:00 am–4:00 pm, with an hour-long break for lunch and recess. Mondays introduce the program theme and design challenges, Tuesdays and Wednesdays feature field trips, and Thursdays and Fridays are dedicated to working on final design projects and models, culminating in student presentations for families.
This program is ideal for curious kids and students interested in exploring architecture, enhancing their design skills, and testing out their own creative ideas.
