The program uniquely integrates an introduction to ethical Generative AI for game development, providing students with cutting-edge tools and perspectives alongside fundamental coding and design skills.
This intensive two-week summer program immerses high school students in the core principles of game design and development. Participants gain hands-on experience with C# programming and the Unity game engine, applying these skills to create their own 2D Unity games. The curriculum emphasizes collaborative teamwork and individual project work, guided by experienced game designers and developers from NYU Steinhardt's CREATE lab. A key component for Summer 2026 is an introduction to ethical Generative AI, teaching students how to effectively and responsibly leverage AI tools within the game development pipeline. Through a blend of lectures, workshops, and dedicated development time, students will not only build functional games but also cultivate critical thinking, problem-solving, and debugging skills essential for a career in game design and software development. The program culminates in students having a completed game project, showcasing their acquired technical and creative abilities.
Students begin their day with a welcome and daily recap, followed by dedicated time for game design and workshop activities. After a lunch break, afternoons are spent on critical gameplay analysis, expert debugging, and intensive development time, with an optional hour for additional TA-supervised development.
This program is ideal for high school students entering their sophomore, junior, or senior year who possess an intermediate understanding of coding and are eager to explore game design, C# and Unity development, and the ethical integration of Generative AI in creating their own games.
