Students gain practical, hands-on research experience with Columbia University faculty and graduate mentors, and receive a stipend for their participation.
The Columbia Engineering - Engineering the Next Generation (ENG) program is a six-week summer research experience for rising high school seniors (current 11th graders) from NYC schools. Students engage in genuine engineering research projects alongside Columbia Engineering faculty, staff, and graduate student mentors. The program aims to develop academic and professional skills through practical research experience, multi-level mentorship, and various workshops. Participants can choose between two tracks: Foundations of Research (FoR) or Center for Smart Streetscapes (CS3). The FoR track involves research in areas like Biomedical, Computer Science, and Environmental Engineering. The CS3 track focuses on interdisciplinary engineering and social science research related to urban technology and trust, including developing AI tools, improving coding and data science skills, and exploring computer vision and the Internet of Things (IoT). The program also includes college preparation and science communications workshops, culminating in project presentations at a poster symposium. Students receive a stipend for their participation.
A typical day involves working with Columbia Engineering researchers on active projects, participating in research skills and science communications workshops, and attending college prep seminars.
This program is best for rising NYC seniors (current 11th graders) with a strong interest in engineering and research, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds.
