About this camp

Columbia Engineering's Engineering the Next Generation (ENG) is a six-week summer research program designed for academically competitive NYC high school juniors and seniors (rising seniors). Students are matched with mentors and supervised by university faculty and graduate students for project-based learning. The program offers two tracks: Foundations of Research (FoR) and Center for Smart Streetscapes (CS3). Participants gain practical research experience, develop academic and professional skills through workshops in research skills and science communications, and engage in multi-level mentorship. Students work on genuine engineering research projects, which in past years have included topics like modeling engine emissions, designing collision avoidance systems, spinal cord regeneration techniques, and machine learning. The CS3 track specifically involves interdisciplinary research in urban technology and trust, including developing AI tools, improving coding and data science skills, and exploring computer vision and the Internet of Things (IoT). The program culminates in multiple projects and a poster symposium presentation, with possibilities for ongoing research and publication in the Columbia Undergraduate Science Journal. Students also receive a stipend for their participation.
