About this camp

The NYU Tandon Science of Smart Cities (SoSC) program is a four-week summer day camp designed for middle school students (ages 12-14) residing in New York City. This immersive program introduces participants to engineering, computer science, and technology concepts to address urban challenges and contribute to sustainable smart city solutions. Students engage in hands-on activities, learning about electronics, circuitry, coding, and microcontroller programming. They work in teams to design and prototype projects that creatively solve real-world problems related to energy, urban infrastructure, transportation, and wireless communications. The curriculum emphasizes STEM skills, research practices, and innovative problem-solving in a materials-rich environment. The program culminates in a public expo where teams present their smart city models and projects. Additionally, students receive mandatory improvisation training from Irondale, a theater company, to enhance their communication and public speaking skills for these presentations.
