The Barnard College NextGen Leadership Institute (STEMinist) is an intensive 3-week pre-college program designed for high school students to delve into scientific inquiry. Participants select one course for the entire session, allowing for in-depth study and the formation of a close-knit cohort. The curriculum involves investigating real questions in biology, chemistry, physics, and data science through hands-on labs, design challenges, and collaborative problem-solving. Students engage in the full cycle of scientific inquiry, from forming hypotheses and collecting data to analyzing results and effectively communicating their findings. Beyond classroom learning, the program incorporates curated NYC learning experiences, including visits to research labs and world-class museums, to demonstrate science in action. The program also includes a weekly "Leadership in Action" series, which introduces practical tools for working with others and thinking strategically, and addresses inequalities women face in STEM fields.
